Children’s Mercy Hospital Plays at Home Gets a New Complex Play System

The indoor playground at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City is one of the largest indoor play areas in the United States. But a newly developed indoor play system, called Complex Play, is allowing children in a hospital to interact in ways that their regular play spaces could never offer.

Zias Architects uses different levels of technology when designing the indoor play systems for Complex Play. Children can create their own puzzles to solve by aligning different tiles, or they can engage in quick-draw games, where they draw pieces of the puzzle by touching them. They can even use their imagination to build structures out of blocks.

The architects have also worked hard to ensure that the play systems offer plenty of space for children to move about, while allowing a child to find his or her own space.

Children can move through the play area at their own pace. Since they can move freely, they can explore the different parts of the play space without being required to stop and go through a puzzle or wait for a child to complete their task.
